  • $11.5 Million Trial Verdict- Police Misconduct

Handy, 29, was shot and killed on March 15, 2017. Handy was shot after investigators say he raised his gun at two St. Paul officers. Both officers — Nathaniel Younce and Mikko Norman — fired their guns and Handy died at the scene. In December of 2017, Ramsey County Attorney John Choi and his staff determined that the two officers' use of force was justified.

A federal jury reached a verdict for liability, and found that Officer Nathaniel Younce was liable for using unreasonable, excessive force and causing the wrongful death of Cordale Handy, violating his civil rights. The family was awarded $11.5 million in damages, including $1.5 million in punitive damages.
